Early Screensavers
Jon provided a handful of screensavers to fans via his website in 2005. As of right now, you can still find them in his archives. Or you can download them here. By clicking the following links, you will open an executable file. I have a little cold, but no viruses. Click to download Stupid Hats, Bunny Girl and Zeebzeebs. As you can see above, I’m rocking Stupid Hats.
Tattoo Design
Jon has done several tattoos, from a large black and white piece on a man’s back to a colorful doodle on a woman’s arm. This illustration is simply entitled “tattoo design” on an early incarnation of one of Jon’s online portfolios.
Stranger Magazine Issue 7
Jon did a 3-part comic called Consumption Deficit for issue 7 of Stranger magazine in 2005. You can pick up back issues for £4.50 + shipping here. Stranger is a bi-monthly creative lifestyle magazine based in Falmouth, Cornwall, United Kingdom that focuses on the alternative, creative, non-metrocentric side of British culture. Produced from non-depletive, sustainable resources, it presents a mix of local and global lifestyle, environment, music, surf, news and current affairs features mixed with striking illustrations, photography and design. Stranger tells it how it is in a savvy and irreverent but soulful voice for the 18-40 year-old market. Since its first local issue in October of 2004, the magazine has grown to be distributed worldwide and feature articles relating to the environment, current affairs, music, fashion, and surf and skate culture.
WIWP Remixed Exhibition at Phonica Records
Wear it With Pride in association with Fact Magazine and Phonica Records presented the Wear It With Pride Remixed Exhibition in 2005. It featured over 30 designers. Each designer was invited to customize a 12″ vinyl record, which was personal to them, and decorate it with whatever they wanted. The theme was left open and the space was to be used as imaginatively as possible. The vinyl was the central and most important piece in the show, but the sleeve and covers were also customized to complete the set. As it turned out, the London Royal Mail broke Jon’s record, but it was exhibited anyway. Along with Jon’s piece, the show featured vinyl by Tado, Jeremyville, Nathan Jurevicius and Superdeux. Jon’s unbroken record is shown below.
Sideline Shirts
In 2005, Jon designed three T-shirts for Sideline priced at UK: £24 US: $40 Europe: €40. According to the site, they’re still available, but it hasn’t been updated in a year. Sideline is/was pretty supportive of Jon’s work, and Jon’s Sideline shirts made it into the T-Shirt 360 compendium. The About page of Sideline’s website describes the company like this:
Sideline is a way for talented young designers to see their work displayed on the chests of the man on the street. We don’t impose the strictures of a commercial design company or fashion label, so they are free to do what they think is their best work, rather than turn out what they are told to.
Puma Stickers
2005 saw Jon dabbling in several avenues of advertising. These stickers were designed for a PUMA campaign. The art is not something you’d typically see and think “Jon Burgerman.” I imagine these were given away with PUMA trainers and track suits. It’s a bit confusing as the imagery mixes things that are obviously “SOoofast” with those that aren’t. Irony in advertising? How 2005!
Early Window Stickers
These 2005 window stickers were the primitive precursors for Jon’s 2008 car art partnership with Infectious.
SPY Magazine
The details of this are as undercover as the cover itself. All I can tell is that Jon did the cover for the March 2005 issue. SPY is either a publication from a German-speaking country or the front text is merely ironic.
Animated Encounters Booklet Interior
Previously, we only had the cover to show you, but here now are some of the interior doodles from the Animated Encounters booklet. It’s a nice 59-page guide to the event with Jon’s doodles throughout. Definitely a cool souvenir from the 5th Bristol International Animation Festival.
In 2005, Jon contributed the cover for Animated Encounters, the 5th Bristol International Animation Festival. Encounters is the umbrella title for two of the UK’s leading film festivals, now combined, with a host of cross-over attractions, at venues in and around the Harbourside area of Bristol, UK. In 2001, the short film festival was joined by Animated Encounters - celebrating and showcasing the productions, talent, creativity, technology and skills that make animation such a popular and successful film form worldwide. It, too, has enjoyed a rapid rise to global prominence, as is demonstrated by its status as the UK’s representative for the prestigious European Cartoon D’Or.
