Pepsi Ad Campaigns
If Jon Burgerman has a personal preference between Coke and Pepsi, he keeps it separate from his professional endeavors. While he has contributed to the Coca Cola Trexi series, he has also done design work for Pepsi. Sometime in 2006, Jon did the above left print ad for Pepsi. I don’t know much about it, except an interesting bit posted by TADO on the Kidrobot Forum here around the time of the ad:
we love jons pepsi piece!! its a very respectable project to be asked to work on as well!! as far as working for certain companies goes, its just part of our job. some companies ‘get it’, others dont. we cant speak for jon, but we are extremely proud of our client list and certainly enjoy working for the larger companies. of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion about certain companies - it comes down to the individual about who they choose to work with. everyone has their own opinions and everyone should respect each others. we’re very lucky in that we usually manage to get a nice balance of commercial work and fun work, and this kind of job is what keeps us going. we’ve done work for several big companies. we really enjoy that kind of work - its what we do.
both jon and ourselves work freelance at this thing full time - we dont have 9-5 jobs. unfortunately doing art shows and toys certainly doesnt pay the bills - its something we do because we love it and enjoy it! working freelance means that without big jobs, there would be no way for the art shows, toys, t-shirt projects etc to happen. we’d be on the streets and burgerman probably wouldnt have any cake to eat. this would make him a very sad creature. again, we cant speak for jon, but we would say that we are just designers or illustrators - we get paid to draw things for people - thats our job.
That was in 2006. In 2008, Jon did a design for a Pepsi can (above right) in a series of international artists produced by Artco. The cans were launched worldwide in January, with the exception of the U.S. and Canada. I don’t really drink soda, but I would have bought a six-pack of these. Wonder why North America got excluded?
Cardboard Fundraiser
Card-board.co.uk launched around the holidays in 2008 selling Christmas cards (UK only) to help raise money for 3rd Year Graphic Design students at Salford University (for their end of year/graduation show). All the money went into helping out with the show. Jon joined Jeremyville, some other name artists and the students themselves as card designers for this successful fundraiser.
Turbo Chainsaw
turbochainsaw is a non-profit underground publication featuring artists, photographers and creative writers from all over the world. The Mag/zine is A5 portrait, B+W, 100pages, Perfect bound and limited to 150 copies. Jon’s work was featured in an issue.
No New Enemies
Jon did a “big blue banner” for the No New Enemies 2008 show at Les Nuits Botanique in Brussels. You can see it on the wall at the left in the picture below. The show included works by Boris Hoppek, The London Police and many others.
No New Enemies is an international network of artists, activists, academics and passionate people aiming to support free expression, outsider arts and collaboration. In name, it is a simple idea, which reflects the wish for a culture of friendship, sharing and sustainable evolution. In practice, it is a structure to support artists and increase the place of art in public life.
Super Snot Zombie Shirt
Jon did an exclusive 4-color screen-printed Super Snot Zombie black T-Shirt, part of the TC Super Heroes T-shirt range and limited to only 40 shirts, for Urban Retro in the UK. The shirt comes with a set of 6 art cards featuring double-sided A5 prints by Jon, Jeremyville, Kev Speck, The Boy Fitz Hammond, Ben The Illustrator and McFaul. The prints are a limited edition of 250. All of this is just £21.95, which is still a good price at $34 USD. Check availability here.
Coloring In Greeting Cards
If you prefer DIY doodles to pre-colored doodle cards, Jon also designed a series of 8 birthday-themed Coloring In Cards. The 120×170mm cards are printed on 300gsm 50/50 re-cycled/sustainable board. They are packaged in red envelopes and include a 4-pack of crayons for £2.20 per card. Cards can be ordered directly from NineteenSeventyThree in the UK or through Vigocards in the US. Coordinate with the Jon Burgerman Color-in Wallpaper!
Concrete Hermit T-Shirts 2008
Jon’s done several t-shirts for Concrete Hermit, including Stroboscope (on black), Smacktick (on black and brown) and Smelly’s Heroes (on green). The shirts retail for about £25. Check Concrete Hermit for current stock.
Open Space Tote Bag
In 2008, New York’s OPEN SPACE asked 125 artists from around the world to donate their time and talent to reducing the amount of wasted plastic bags (1,000 per family every year) by creating custom-designed tote bags. The bags were displayed and sold through OPEN SPACE from April 12th through May 3rd. 100% of the profits from the sales of the show went to the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, a New York-based organization committed to environmental education and advocacy. Jon’s tote bag is sold out.
OPEN SPACE was started by Kalene Rivers and Daniel Weise to combine their shared passions for art, culture and design. The space is home to thundercut, an art and design studio, SHERBERT Magazine, an independently published art and literature magazine, a gallery featuring the works of artists they find inspiring, and an event space where they can host events they find important and interesting.
Doodled Cushion
Remember Steve’s sermon on the uselessness of pillows on Coupling? If your girlfriend insists on couch cushions, make a case for this one by Jon for NINETEENSEVENTYTHREE. It measures 500 x 500mm and is digitally printed onto 100% cotton. The doodles are a blue and grey colorway for £40.00 per cushion.
Rogue Audio Haphazard Album Art
In 2008, Jon did some great album artwork for Haphazard by London DJ Cass aka Rogue Audio. The Rogue Audio MySpace page describes it like this:
The album happily traverses the rugged ground from ambient, through hip-hop, drum and bass to live broken beats. Featuring Cass on vocals on various tracks, this is the natural and impressive evolution of an already illustrious production career.
The equally impressive - and distinctively edgy – album artwork is the joint creation of Cass, and the genius artist and scribbler, Jon Burgerman.
Definitely check out the MySpace page because there are slideshows of a design by Jon that fans have tacked up around the world (a few selected images appear here). Jon also did a limited edition (100 worldwide; 10 signed) prints for the release of the album. As of right now, the prints are still available at UK menswear lifestylers oki-ni here for £18.00 (down from £36.00).
