NACHSCHLAG!
It’s no secret that Jon’s been making salad into art for years. But this past weekend, his salart joined NACHSCHLAG!, an international group exhibition in cooperation with NoNewEnemies, curated by Harlan Levey & Jörg Heikhaus (heliumcowboy artspace). The show opened June 20th and runs through August 14th.
Here’s a bit about the concept from Harlan:
Food Waste has been repeatedly discussed as a European Problem. What does this mean though?
Waste and trash are concepts defined by perception. What are the real problems in discussions about Food Waste? It isn’t a lack of food that leaves us hungry. This is information, mass media and institutions may not give.
Can art provide innovative approaches to social ills?
’Nachschlag!’ challenges the aesthetics of waste and provides as much food for eating as it does for thought, using art as a catalyst for community gathering, celebration and dialogue.
Calamity makes cousins of us all.
And a little more:
That non-sold chocolate Santas are melted and then again sold as Easter chocolates, is probably an urban myth. Most of us presumably were still brought up with the mentality “with food one does not play” and told not to waste food. The arguments “Somewhere in the world children are starving and would certainly have been grateful about a little broccoli” or “If you do not finish your vegetables, there will be no dessert” most of us still know. However, we seem to have forgotten a little about them: In first world countries about 1/3 of all bought food still ends up on the garbage. In most cases sill in an absolutely delicious and eatable state, still within the expiry date and most of the times still originally packed and unopened. Food Waste = a global problem.
Clever way to bring attention to this issue. Check it out if you’re nearby. Here are some of Jon’s dishes for the show. Read more about NACHSCHLAG! here.
