Lossy Botany Lab: The Plant Plushes

JB x FM collabs for Lossy Botany Lab

Remember this great Felt Mistress teaser? Felt Mistress really knocked it out of the park with these felted fruits, veggies and plants. As with most of Jon’s shows, there is a ton of work, so here’s just a glimpse at some of the plushes photographed by Jeps and Evelien (of Darker and the Dutch Doodlesplatter posse). Stay tuned (or if you’re at the last one, look back) for a plethora of posts [click here for current tag archive], each concerning a separate element of the installation and exhibit (as well as the pricelist from heliumcowboy artspace). Click through to see some of the great soft sculptures, a pic with Evelien to show the size of these buggers and a little video too. Head over to Felt Mistress’ Flickr set for even more fantastic felty foliage.

Buff Monster’s Custom Toy Show

Buff Monster's The Monster Within Custom Toy Show

Recently, custom group toy shows have been making me weary. Not the case here. This show has a stellar lineup and a unifying concept. My bud, Buff Monster, gave “roughly 50 super awesome artists [room] to reinterpret my 3-inch toys,” and according to Buff (as well as all people with eyeballs in their heads who’ve seen the previews), “there are some really amazing pieces in the show”! The show opens Saturday, July 10th at 6:30PM at Giant Robot in Los Angeles.

Buff, who shot all the photos of the pieces and created a special poster for the event, sent Doodlesplatter these exclusive snaps of Jon’s Monster. If you look closely at the at the side view in the triptych below, I think Jon’s taking the yellow fellow in the direction of an erection…

The full roster of participating artists includes:

Aaron Martin/Angry Woebots, APAK!, Arbito, Flying Fortress (Germany), Christopher Bettig, Jon Burgerman (UK), Camilla d’Errico (Canada), Chaz/The London Police (Netherlands), Olivier Cramm/KOA (France), Tristan Eaton, Huck Gee, Godmachine (UK), KaNO, David Horvath/Uglydolls, Mari Inukai, Jay222, Jeremyville (Australia), Kirkland Jue/Toybot Studios, Paul Kaiju, Mike Kelly/Le Merde, Travis Lampe, Joe Ledbetter, Daniel Lim/Fawn Fruits, Travis Louie, Markie Darkie (Canada), Drew Millward (UK), Miss Mindy, Junko Mizuno (Japan), Brian Morris, Moto (Japan), Mark Nagata, Martin Ontiveros, Alex Pardee, Albert Reyes, Johnny Rodriguez/KMNDZ, Chris Ryniak, Benjamin Salomon, Greg Simkins/Craola, Sket, Skinner, Bwana Spoons, Sucklord, Tado (UK), Uamou (Japan), Michelle Valigura, Amanda Visell, Yoskay Yamamoto.

The Monster Within closes on August 4th. I’m really working on trying to get Buff to bring the show up to San Francisco. Stay tuned!

Lossy Botany Lab Sneak Peeks Part 4: The Mixed Media Edition

Wood is Good by Jon Burgerman

Is it possible for someone to have too much fun? I’m sure setting up a solo show in Germany is stressful, but from the looks of these photos, all I see is some good wood, plentiful Poscas, a blingface, a trio of felted peapods and Jon finishing up a Popsicle! Of the wood panels, Jon remarked: “Been working on some wood panels. It’s like cardboard but harder.” For other shots of Jon’s wood, be sure to click the “wood” tag. Don’t worry, kids, it’s all safe for work!

The show has grown through many stages, in which Jon was a resident of heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg. Lossy Botany Lab’s grand opening is now right around the corner: doors will be ajar on July1st.

Fresh Felt Mistress Collabs for Lossy Botany Lab

Felt Mistress Sneak Peeks

Felt Mistress shares some sneak peeks of the work she’s  been doing recently for Jon’s upcoming show, The Lossy Botany Lab, at heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg.  One thing about FM’s plushes, they kill in color (above) and they’re  bad in B&W (below). [Quick translation for my mom, who dutifully reads Doodlesplatter: In youth parlance: "kill" means to reign supremely and "bad" means good. Crazy, I know!]

As always, looking forward to more! Stay tuned to DS for sneaks from Jon this afternoon & tomorrow AM as the The Lossy Botany Lab grows closer…

Pictures From Kidrobot’s Doodle and Scrawl

Doodle and Scrawl with Jon Burgerman

Kidrobot posted a slideshow of photos from Jon’s recent Doodle and Scrawl signing at KRNY. The event looked well-attended, and Jon added colorful doodles to many a Munny. Although the bulk of the objects tended to be Munnyworld, I really dig this one person’s customized hat. A few photos follow. Click through for the slideshow courtesy of KR’s Flickr set.

Brain Drain Begins!

Brain Drain: Jon Burgerman

If you’re reading this, you’re probably not at the The Winchester Discovery Centre, where Jon’s latest solo show, Brain Drain, is currently commencing. Not wanting his overseas friends to be left out of the fun, Jon sent over some snaps of the almost-complete show. You can view the finished product live at the Winchester or over at his site here. Brain Drain looks great, and it’s full of new mixed media, muradoodles and collaborative work. The show runs through July 11th. If you’re in the area, Jon will be there for a talk on May 26th. RSVP for the 5/26 chat here.

Thursday Morning Sneak Peeks

thursday-sneak-peeks

I’m not typically too fond of sneak peeks, but I’m on a roll this morning here, and I thought you could all use a bit of delayed gratification. What you’re looking at above is a mysterious object sent directly by Jon (origin and provenance as yet unknown) book-ended by two plush sculptures by the always-awesome Felt Mistress courtesy of her Flickr page. The plushes are set to be revealed at Jon’s upcoming (May 14th) Brain Drain show at the Winchester Discovery Centre. Of all the flurry of Burger activity across the pond lately, this is the show I’d like to go to most. Please send over the private jet, thanks.

Custom Piggy Bank

Custom Piggybank by Jon Burgerman

A basic Google search never fails to unearth something Jon Burgerman doodled while I blinked to sneeze. Right here we have a goodie from the Spanish Piggy Bank Blog that was originally uploaded in December of 2008. It’s a ceramic piggy bank. Banks are a new item for the artkive, hooray! Here’s some bilingual bits about the project:

What is a Piggy Bank? ¿Que es un Piggy Bank?

Its a ceramic pot in the shape of a pig with a slot on the top so you can store your coins. Es un recipiente de ceramica en forma de cerdito con una ranura en la parte superior para almacenar monedas.

What is it for? ¿Para que sirve?

Its used to teach children the value of money and the illusion to be able to buy something special and a litlle more expensive with the money saved up. Se utiliza para enseñar a los niños el valor del dinero y la ilusion de ahorrar para comprar algo mas caro con el dinero ahorrado.

How is it used? ¿Como se utiliza?

The idea is not to be able to access the money inside the pig untill the day comes when you wish to buy your object wich you have saved up for. To do this you must brake the pig. La idea es no poder acceder al dinero dentro del cerdito hasta el dia que deseas comprar el objeto por el cual has ahorrado.

How is it made? ¿Como esta hecho?

Its handmade in ceramic. Artesanalmente en ceramica.

Made in Spain not in China. Hecho en España no en China.

Made by an adult not a child. Realizado por un adulto, no un niño

Why this website? ¿Por qué esta web?

The idea is to create the biggest collection of pigs in the world. La idea es crear la colección mas grande de cerditos del mundo.

The idea, website, logo and othe bits and bobs are by… La idea, web, logo y otras cosillas han sido creadas por…

James Marr.

The exhibit for which the pigs were being customized has already happened, and it looks like (sadly) the website has not been updated in a while. You can still download the piggy bank template to design your own here.
