Burgerman x Felt Mistress Hipsters in 2D and 3D
I can’t resist one last post about the Felt Mistress‘ Hipsters plush collab with Jon. Louise showed us a couple of process shots, but thanks to the photography team at GRNY, here are some side-by-side comparisons of the Hipsters in 2D and 3D. I love these guys so much. They recently got some great press on the Creative Review blog, and now they’re lighting up the “twitterverse.” Congrats! Some of the Hipsters are still hanging out for sale here.
This just in from The Felt Mistress:
Being a perfectionist I have to mention the colours and some clothes (Hammel didn’t have patches on his elbow) on the sketches I worked from changed on the final sketches Jon produced for the show. Don’t want y’all to think I changed the colours or clothing. (I sound crazy don’t I) Thanks X.
Hipster Plushes by Felt Mistress
This is especially cool to finally see after a bunch of teasers. A couple of quick observations about the amazing Hipster plushes of one Louise (aka Felt Mistress): 1) They rule, 2) They really are accurate 3D versions of Jon’s characters, and 3) They really are accurate versions of Brooklyn hipsters (interesting as Jon and Louise are both from the UK). These were, of course, part of Jon’s solo show, My American Summer. Close up shots of each character after the jump. Process shots over at the Felt Mistress Flickr page. The dolls are for sale (while available) from Giant Robot for $325 each. Call (212) 674-4769 for availability. I hope these go to good homes. If I had money, I’d be like Angelina and Brad and adopt the whole lot.
Felt Mistress x Burgerman Plushes
You might remember Felt Mistress from her previous collab with Jon for 2008’s Because I Can’t Sit Still show. Louise returns this August with new plush creations for Jon’s upcoming solo show at Giant Robot in NY. More details to come.
Because I Can’t Sit Still
Because I Can’t Sit Still was Jon’s second solo show in London and it continues the work of the August Anserine Apparitions show in Hamburg. The work featured included Anxiety Wall: a sprawling installation of ink drawings wallpapering the entire back of the gallery space (later sold off to fans), sculptural pieces, new large scale fabric prints and the showcase of his monograph Pens Are My Friends book published by IdN. This show ran from October 20th to November 1st 2008 at Coningsby Gallery.
Feltmistress Plushes
Sometimes other artists get inspired to create homages to Jon’s work. Feltmistress sewed up three plushes (and accessories) for Jon’s Because I Can’t Sit Still show in London in 2008. The characters are Sprouthead, Luke and Tickler. Nasty Vinyl in Camden purchased the plushes.
Circus Punks
Jon has done two Circus Punks, one production and one custom. The Clown King Fluffer (left) was the production model, standing 15 inches tall made out of stuffed canvas and fake fur. There was an edition of 75 made, each signed and numbered. Prices seem to vary wildly on this item, but a couple can still be found. Pinky McFluff (right) was a one-off custom and is now happily harbored by Maz. Pictures of the custom on KR here.
Wee Pot
Jon collaborated with Flo Harrison on this cheeky incontinent knit teapot.
Immature Miniatures Plushes
April 14th through May 31st of 2007, Jon joined forces with TADO to transform Paris’ Dadawan/Madturnip (now collectively known as NUKOD) into a wall-to-wall doodlefest. Together, they made so much incredible collaborative art. There were collabodoodles, digital prints on canvas, giclee prints, hand-made resin toys and hand-sewn felt plushes. They even drew on the balloons. Here are the plushes. [Pictures from Jon Burgerman, Maz, Tado's Flickr and Dadawan's Flickr.]
Bunny Flop
Bunny Flop is a giant bean bag/plush toy collaboration between Jon Burgerman and Martin Vicker of Medessin. Bunny Flop was unleashed at Unleashed, in Nottingham in 2007. He’s an Oldenburgian bean-bag, soft-sculpture and has since been adopted out.
Said Martin Vicker: “It’s good to work with someone who usually works in 2D. The Bunny Flop is very different from my usual work and a bit of laugh. Humour is very important in terms of design, and this collaboration with JB was a great release of energy into a product that prompted a spectrum of response, mainly laughter!” The piece proved a most comfortable resting place for weary design show attendees during London Design Festival who were found sleeping, working, playing and observing on the various parts of Bunny Flop throughout the show.
BDI had this to say about Unleashed: Nottingham astounded press and public alike at Designersblock London with a new project titled Unleashed. The show, instigated to gift raw inspiration, bought together creative practitioners from different disciplines to collaborate on evocative new pieces.
Artoyz Exhibit in Paris 2006
Jon had an exhibit at Artoyz Galerie in Paris from May 4-20th 2006 featuring new large canvas prints, scribbles and toys. Jon hid five drawings on yellow paper around the gallery and anyone sending in photos won a special prize. In the two pictures immediately below, you can see hand-painted precursors to 2007’s Burgermenos Qee series and 2008’s Heroes of Burgertown mini figures. Below them is ZeebZeeb, Winkus and just a few examples of some spectacular (and colorful) canvases.
