iPhone and Laptop Sleeves

Jon did two collabs with French sleevemasters, Côte et Ciel: an ultra-exclusive MacBook sleeve and an iPhone/iPod Touch case. The MacBook sleeve was available in three sizes MacBook Air: 32.5 x 24cm, MacBook: 34 x 24.5cm and MacBook 15-inch: 36 x 26cm.

The laptop sleeves were made out of neoprene laminated jersey material with a multicolor print overlaid and no zipper. The iPod/iPhone cases were made from rubber with neatly molded buttons and injection molded multicolor characters. They were available in three styles: Oranges, Anton, Blues for the iPod Touch and iPhone only (first and second generation models will both fit).

The laptop sleeves were originally priced at £45 + postage. I could have had one of these if not for my laptop being a PC and my iPod being an ancient 4th Generation Clickwheel…

Funky Cartons Design Competition

This was a mock-up for a Funkycarton which was part of a juried competition for which Jon was a judge. Funkycartons asks artists to put the “art” back in “carton.” During the 2007 competition, £5,000 was up for grabs, and the only limit is imagination. Jon and another artist, Dist, produced carton art, showcasing just how creative the possibilities can be. The ‘Artons 2007 challenge was to create a design for a carton for an imaginary mineral water product. The competition was open to any design talent in the UK and Ireland, and was judged by a panel including Lynda Relph-Knight, editor of Design Week, Michael Wolff, ex-founder of design agency Wolff-Olins and, of course, street artist Jon Burgerman.

The competition was launched by Funkycartons, an organisation set up by Tetra Pak, the leading manufacturer of paper-based drinks cartons, to work with the marketing, design and brand community. The aim is to showcase how cartons can be used as a modern packaging alternative for a wide range of beverages. Or according to their website: “Tetra Pak Ltd sells approximately 2 billion packages in the UK. We think you’ll agree that makes them experts at producing a lot of funky cartons.”

Corrupted Data Mimobot

Jon contributed a mimobot design to Flying Cat x Mimoco Artist Series 1 (with TADO) in 2006.

Corrupted_Data is a dancing mêlée of all your important ones and zeros, turned to mush by an unexpected surge of electricity. Important financial documents have morphed into showery black clouds, your mp3’s have curled at the edges and gone crispy and all your favourite photos have gone from jpegs to jumping king-bird-fish heads. Cheeky and hungry spores swim through the vast sea of homeless binary searching for new hosts to infect.

Corrupted_Data features an exclusive animated treat featuring the blip-bloppy music of UK-based Penfold Plum.

mimobots are a line of collectible art toy USB flash drives launched in 2005 by mimoco LLC. Designed by contemporary character artists and produced in limited runs of usually between 500 to 3,500 units, mimobots merge the aesthetics of art toys with the function of USB flash drives. Their memory capacities range from 512MB to 4GB and each mimobot is preloaded with bonus original and removable content including animation, music, games, video, screensavers, or other surprises. The Jon Burgerman mimobot has been sold out for years, but you can still see the original animated trailer here.
