Symbian Character Designs
Catching up on a few unrealized projects that are still awesome ideas. Here’s one from 2006-2007. Jon did these character designs as a commission for mobile software company, Symbian. In the end, the company called it off midway. Too bad, because there are a lot of cool characters in there.
Funky Cartons Design Competition
This was a mock-up for a Funkycarton which was part of a juried competition for which Jon was a judge. Funkycartons asks artists to put the “art” back in “carton.” During the 2007 competition, £5,000 was up for grabs, and the only limit is imagination. Jon and another artist, Dist, produced carton art, showcasing just how creative the possibilities can be. The ‘Artons 2007 challenge was to create a design for a carton for an imaginary mineral water product. The competition was open to any design talent in the UK and Ireland, and was judged by a panel including Lynda Relph-Knight, editor of Design Week, Michael Wolff, ex-founder of design agency Wolff-Olins and, of course, street artist Jon Burgerman.
The competition was launched by Funkycartons, an organisation set up by Tetra Pak, the leading manufacturer of paper-based drinks cartons, to work with the marketing, design and brand community. The aim is to showcase how cartons can be used as a modern packaging alternative for a wide range of beverages. Or according to their website: “Tetra Pak Ltd sells approximately 2 billion packages in the UK. We think you’ll agree that makes them experts at producing a lot of funky cartons.”
GORE-TEX Ads
Jon did a series of print ads and one animated cinema ad for GORE-TEX. All of the ads featured drawings of faces on toes, like the one above and the (unrelated) image below.
WipEout Pure Advertisement
Jon did an ad for WipEout Pure on the PSP, which appeared in lots of UK magazines (Creative Review, Good For Nothing, Vice, DJ Magazine, Mixmag, Dazed and Confused, Straight No Chaser, Intersect and Trace) in 2005. The ad was for Jon’s downloadable Burgertown Races track for the game.
Snickers Advertisement T-shirt
Lest anyone think doodles are just wanton scribbles in a vacuum or that the life of a doodler is one of abject poverty, occasionally, doodles can be used to sell candy. In 2005, Jon was asked to design a T-shirt for this Snickers campaign which exposed the abs of a skater dude in an attempt to convey “satisfaction.” I love the text on the shirt. It reads: “I’m only going in the ambulance if they let me drive it.”
Puma Stickers
2005 saw Jon dabbling in several avenues of advertising. These stickers were designed for a PUMA campaign. The art is not something you’d typically see and think “Jon Burgerman.” I imagine these were given away with PUMA trainers and track suits. It’s a bit confusing as the imagery mixes things that are obviously “SOoofast” with those that aren’t. Irony in advertising? How 2005!
Custom Levi’s Labels
Jon was commissioned to paint on leather labels for the 150th anniversary of Levi’s 501 jeans.
