Lossy Botany Lab: The Wood Panels
Here we see the wood panels Jon incorporated into his Lossy Botany Lab show at Hamburg’s heliumcowboy artspace. Click here to see the humble beginnings of these colorful panels. Our friends Jeps and Evelien of Darker and the Dutch Doodlesplatter posse got the rest of us front row seats for Jon’s recent Lossy Botany Lab show at Hamburg’s heliumcowboy artspace. Please note that banana-beer phone with fruit earpiece and bottle mouthpiece is not for sale, but you are encouraged to make your own.
Buff Monster’s Custom Toy Show
Recently, custom group toy shows have been making me weary. Not the case here. This show has a stellar lineup and a unifying concept. My bud, Buff Monster, gave “roughly 50 super awesome artists [room] to reinterpret my 3-inch toys,” and according to Buff (as well as all people with eyeballs in their heads who’ve seen the previews), “there are some really amazing pieces in the show”! The show opens Saturday, July 10th at 6:30PM at Giant Robot in Los Angeles.
Buff, who shot all the photos of the pieces and created a special poster for the event, sent Doodlesplatter these exclusive snaps of Jon’s Monster. If you look closely at the at the side view in the triptych below, I think Jon’s taking the yellow fellow in the direction of an erection…

Lossy Botany Lab Sneak Peeks Part 6: The Installation
Here’s a cool stop motion video made by the fine folks at Hamburg’s heliumcowboy artspace. The video depicts various lab techs involved in the construction of the building, whilst Jon occasionally pops into the foreground with a banana.
Here’s an early blueprint of the Lossy Botany Lab, back when it was still called a Lossy Botnay Lab. Ha! As they say across the pond, just taking the piss out of ya there.
This picture shows that it’s very important to choose safety when engaged in building. For instance, abandon goggles and pick up beer. What a lovely staff at heliumcowboy artspace. I hope to someday visit. Read the rest of this entry »
Lossy Botany Lab Sneak Peeks Part 5: Blowing Stuff Up
This fella is known as Lab Assistant Ollie. He works at heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg, where The Lossy Botany Lab will make its debut on July 1st from 8-11PM. I wonder what will become of this giant lemon of a balloon? Could it get a similar treatment to 2007’s Immature Miniatures inflatables? Lossy Botany Lab Sneak Peeks Part 4: The Mixed Media Edition
Is it possible for someone to have too much fun? I’m sure setting up a solo show in Germany is stressful, but from the looks of these photos, all I see is some good wood, plentiful Poscas, a blingface, a trio of felted peapods and Jon finishing up a Popsicle! Of the wood panels, Jon remarked: “Been working on some wood panels. It’s like cardboard but harder.” For other shots of Jon’s wood, be sure to click the “wood” tag. Don’t worry, kids, it’s all safe for work!
The show has grown through many stages, in which Jon was a resident of heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg. Lossy Botany Lab’s grand opening is now right around the corner: doors will be ajar on July1st.
Lossy Botany Lab Sneak Peeks Part 3: Getting Sketchy
Jon always fills a sketchbook in prep for a show or a painting. Here, he’s shared with Doodlesplatter some of his preliminary sketches for The Lossy Botany Lab at heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg. Throughout today, you’ll see more of how these doodles were fleshed out. The show opens in ONE DAY on July 1st! Jeps will be representing and picture-taking on behalf of the Dutch posse! Lossy Botany Lab Sneak Peeks Part 2: Color on Canvas
Yesterday, we got some Felt Mistress plush peeks and some outlines and splashes of color for Jon’s upcoming solo show, The Lossy Botany Lab at heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg. Today, we’ve got still more sneaks of work-in-progress. This should be a very interesting show, because as a vegetarian, plants are central to Jon’s diet. As the saying goes, you are what you eat. Basically, Jon Burgerman is a salad. Lossy Botany Lab opens July 1st at 8PM. Stay tuned for sketches and installations!
Lossy Botany Lab Sneak Peeks Part 1
Further to this morning’s Felt Mistress plush peeks, here is the start of some The Lossy Botany Lab works in progress at heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg. These images–sent exclusively to Doodlesplatter by Mr. Doodles himself–show outlines without color and colors without outlines. (Or is it Games Without Frontiers? Hmmm.) It’ll be interesting to see how Jon completes these pieces. Expect many surprises at the show, and a few more sneaks before it opens July 2nd.
Lossy Botany Lab Continues New York’s Lossy Data Lab Research in Hamburg
On July 1st, Jon reinvents his 2009 New York-based Lossy Data Lab installation as the Hamburg-based Lossy Botany Lab. Jon is already in Germany where he is preparing new work at the heliumcowboy artspace. The Lossy Botany Lab is Jon’s second solo exhibition in the space (the first show being 2008’s Anserine Apparitions). “Soft sculptures, paintings, drawings as well as a botanical installation on site” are among the sights you can expect to see as Jon “explores the boundaries of art and scientific research in a neo-dadaistic manner”. Doodlesplatter will have exclusive sneak peeks early next week as Jon’s botany progresses.
Quoth Jon:
“The Lossy Data Lab has had to relocate and move its research into botany after a lot of the data from NYC seemed inconclusive and corrupted. The lab also ran out of money. I felt studying plant life, observing new species and creating its own hybrid forms would be a better use of its merged resources. Also, through pure chance and accident, the lab has discovered some of the plants it’s cultivating have special medicinal properties. We’d like to state that the lab is in no way going to purely focus it’s energies growing and selling such specimens to the downtrodden and hedonistic thrill seekers of society. – Well, not for too long anyway.”
There’s recently been an update to the Lossy Botany Lab from HC HQ:
Donations are necessary for research to continue. We are currently very close to realising our goals for the grand launch of the Lab on July 1st. Some fascinating new discoveries have been unearthed, which we can’t wait to share with you. Please give us your poor plants, your tired tulips, your huddled grasses longing to be free… And they can contribute and become an essential part of the Lossy Botany Lab. Donators will receive a small yet valuable gift from the president of the Lab, Mr. Jon Burgerman, as a thank you at the opening gala event on the evening of July 1st. House plants, cacti, small shrubs, potted herbs, sticks with leaves on them, will all be gratefully accepted. Just drop them off at the Lossy Data Lab HQ: heliumcowboy artspace, Bäckerbreitergang 73-75, UNTIL TUESDAY, June 29 the latest! The earlier the better!
Surely, your green thumb managed to mangle at least one plant in your garden. Let it get Doodle CPR by bringing it to the address above. Jon will be attending the opening reception, and he will also be available for interviews during an English-language press-preview at the gallery on Wednesday, June 30th from 11AM until 1PM. Lossy Botany Lab runs through August 6th.
