I’ve often said that sneaker collectors and toy collectors have a lot in common, chiefly: recognizing art and value in something most people regard as disposable. The sneakerheads at SoleHeaven got together with the art crew of Zero Cool Gallery to merge their passions into the Kicks ‘n’ Canvas exhibition. The show is set to open in central London on April 8th and will feature artists such as Goldie, INSA, Dan Baldwin, Meggs, Ben Frost, Mr. Jago and Dickchicken alongside Jon.

SoleHeaven presents Kicks n Canvas, a fresh concept on the art scene. The idea for the event is to bring together two of SoleHeaven’s most loved pursuits - Kicks & Art. We’ve locked down a scorching line-up of 21 artists primed and ready to paint. The concept of the show is to confront traditional graffiti writers and artists with a new canvas, and thats a pair of pristine all-white Nike kicks. We are throwing down the sneaker gauntlet to see them transfer their styles from the metal shutters, concrete bridges and underpasses on to a pair of trainers. Every artist will be hand painting and customizing a pair of kicks and teaming it up with a 50×50cm piece.

The Doodlesplatter posse knows that Jon is no stranger to footwear. These are especially cool-looking kicks, in my opinion. I’m digging the backs (or is that called “Heel Counter” in sneaker-speak…). Thanks to Anthony at Zero Cool for providing the photos. Unfortunately, I’m an ocean away from attending this event, but if you’re on the right continent, check out Kicks ‘n’ Canvas by RSVPing here.

In August of 2009, I interviewed Jon for Heeb Magazine, and he mentioned how he was anxious about writing a guest piece for a UK publication called The Anxious Times. Well, the magazine came out, and boy is it glorious. I had no idea magazines like this existed. Sporting a celebrity cover, it includes stories with tantalizing titles like “COMPULSIVE HOARDING PODCAST” and “Anxiety UK Joins the British Toilet Association (BTA) Campaign for Better Public Toilets.” The fact that you folks across the pond have both this magazine AND a BTA just makes me want to sanitize my hands, walk in and out the door 3 times and board a plane ASAP.

Anyhow, enough about me. Jon got a two-page spread I’ve taken the liberty of scanning below. He talks about the role of anxiety in his art shows like Because I Can’t Sit Still and Anxiety Room. He lists 21 Anxieties, including #7: “My favourite pens being discontinued.” My favorite bit is this quote, which I, maybe some of you, and most likely Mr. Woody Allen, relate to:

I’ve started trying to harness [anxiety's] debilitating energy into something useful. If it’s going to make me act in a strange way, I might as well use it for the entertainment of others or even myself.

These 1-inch Worryknotts are about an inch tall and come in red. On the subject of worry, wise words from the Burgerman:

Worry really does solve nothing. Just think of all the previous times you’ve over worried about something… did it really turn out that bad? It can’t of done too much else you wouldn’t still be here. Focus on the good, not on the possibly bad.

The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse is an ecological treasure trove of art & craft materials, educational supplies, vintage furniture, home décor, paper goods, fabric, and much more. Founded in 1979 by two Oakland public school teachers, the Depot promotes solid waste diversion and resource conservation through the Depot store and environmental education programs.

In early Fall, we found the above Posse sticker in the company of Rock Hudson, a shout out to heavy metal and a merry assortment of sliced tomato and pepper magnets. When we returned this week, Jon had been joined by Alfred E. Neuman, Dead Eyes, the alphabet and some really GOOD NEWS. I got this picture, and Greta got 5 vintage patterns, 1 broken candle, the tiniest bath tub you ever did see and a clear Christmas ornament, all for $1.81. If you’re in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, CA, they’ve got a ton of new hardcover Upper Playground art books for only $2.50 each.

We can now present a few images of the previously-blogged Customizable Hoodie Toys from Culpritart/toys and Dotsan produced by Shapeways, the company that uses a 3D printer to “turn your designs into reality”. Two things you’re bound to notice right off the bat:

These toys are TINY. (The green one pictured taps out at 2 inches/5 cm. The red one stands a bit taller at 7cm. This may seem small for $25.)

Gone is the smoothness of the figure and blister packaging envisioned for the prototype shown here.

If you can get past those factors (I can in this particular case), it’s a cute little toy which presents the unique opportunity to customize the colors of a Jon Burgerman hoodie. Unlike the sandy texture of the figure itself, the process of working with Shapeways was extremely smooth. I emailed Dotsan my preference for green. Within 24 hours, he had uploaded a model to Shapeways. I purchased it, and Shapeways sent me emails when it went into production and when it left the Dutch facilities destined for California. The figure arrived safely packed, but the “packaging” was just a plastic bag.

At first I thought the sandstone was weird, but Greta (often the voice of reason) pointed out that “weird is good.” Doodlesplatter is, after all, not just a project to chronicle every waking move of the artist, Jon Burgerman, but also to showcase the different canvases that are possible for art. 3D printing will probably not win any fans among the hardcore art toy collecting contingency (yet), but if you have a spare $25, you can get a pint-size figure custom-made in Burgerwear tailored to your liking. I like my little dude. Get the 5cm (2 inch) figure (currently the only customizable size) or the 7cm (2.8 inch) figure. Click through to see my guy digging some coconut juice and Jeps’ figure hanging with a Yami.
