Doodling Results from Kidrobot London Signing

Jon Burgerman at Kidrobot London

On December 17th, Jon did a signing at Kidrobot’s London location. Beforehand, he used twitter to encourage people to “bring crazy things along to be doodlearized, sillier the better!” The fans really came through with toys, clocks, cups, cars, clothes and even a plastic pigeon. And Jon gamely doodled it all. Looked like a great time. Photos via Kidrobot, The Daily Street, and Elektrodrop. Posts about the individual objects to follow all morning, so stay tuned to Doodlesplatter!

Infectious Adhesive Art

Infectious

Infectious is a San Francisco-based company that makes adhesive art for your car, and more recently, your laptop and other small gadgets. Jon has a selection of blue, grey and black stickers called Lunar Park. My girlfriend gave me a big sheet of these that I will put on our car when the weather warms up a little.

It’s called Lunar Park. On one hand it’s a simple collection of characters enjoying each others’ company on a sunny day in the park. On the other, there’s a slight suggestion in the drawings that some of the characters have enjoyed themselves a little too much. I like the LP Dark Side of the Moon and the book Lunar Park by Brett Easton Ellis. I can’t say these have completely influenced this work but I think the idea of ‘lunatics in the park’ and the title of the book were in my brain somewhere while creating this.

  • Infectious car art is designed for easy installation with just one or two people from a few minutes to a couple hours depending on the package.
  • The art is durable enough to withstand extreme weather conditions (and car washes) for up to two years.
  • The art can be removed easily with a hairdryer.
  • The kits come in Icons ($27.99), Accents ($79-$119), Hood Pieces ($79-$145), Door Kits ($159), Side Kits ($159-$379) and Full Kits ($299).
  • The range of artists involved currently includes:  Dalek,  Buff Monster and Tara McPherson.
  • The site features an exclusive interview with each artist including questions about cars, inspiration and music.

Hot Wheels VW Bus

Jon customized a 1:18 die-cast scale Hot Wheels Volkswagen Bus for TOYS, a pop surrealist exhibit put on by Gallery 1988. The show took place in April 2005 with proceeds from the art benefitting the Children Affected by AIDS foundation. Jon’s VW bus was parked amongst customs by Greg Simkins and Bwana Spoons. Each Volkswagen bus was priced between $300 and $5,500.

“This exhibit exemplifies how the magic of toys not only inspire us at a young age, but remain a form of inspiration in our adult years,” said Richard Dickson, senior vice president, Marketing, Media & Entertainment Worldwide, Mattel Brands. “Mattel is home to some of the most popular and beloved toy brands and we’re honored to have the 40th anniversary of Hot Wheels commemorated through this one-of-kind custom art form.” [via Reuters]

Ice Cream Truck

This has got to be one of the coolest collabs/customizations I have ever seen. In 2007, Jon painted an ice cream truck for the “Own Your C” campaign.

“Own Your C” is a campaign that seeks to help teens make the connection that their choices define who they are and who they will become. The campaign recognizes making individual choices empowers youth to make educated decisions, including the choice to become or remain tobacco free.

C-Ride is a branded ice cream truck, featuring a backlit chrome “C” hood ornament, airbag suspension and custom rims, custom lighting and sound, and a freezer for distributing C popsicles. Equipped with a street team, the C-Ride extends the brand to rural and mountain communities in America, as well as serving as a distribution point for tobacco cessation materials.

Does it get any awesomer than that? More pics to answer that question… Read the rest of this entry »
