The talented Felt Mistress has created puppet effigies of Jon and Jim Avignon in support of their upcoming London Anxieteam gigs. Go see them!
Lossy Botany Lab: The Plant Plushes
Remember this great Felt Mistress teaser? Felt Mistress really knocked it out of the park with these felted fruits, veggies and plants. As with most of Jon’s shows, there is a ton of work, so here’s just a glimpse at some of the plushes photographed by Jeps and Evelien (of Darker and the Dutch Doodlesplatter posse). Stay tuned (or if you’re at the last one, look back) for a plethora of posts [click here for current tag archive], each concerning a separate element of the installation and exhibit (as well as the pricelist from heliumcowboy artspace). Click through to see some of the great soft sculptures, a pic with Evelien to show the size of these buggers and a little video too. Head over to Felt Mistress’ Flickr set for even more fantastic felty foliage.
Fresh Felt Mistress Collabs for Lossy Botany Lab
Felt Mistress shares some sneak peeks of the work she’s been doing recently for Jon’s upcoming show, The Lossy Botany Lab, at heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg. One thing about FM’s plushes, they kill in color (above) and they’re bad in B&W (below). [Quick translation for my mom, who dutifully reads Doodlesplatter: In youth parlance: "kill" means to reign supremely and "bad" means good. Crazy, I know!]
As always, looking forward to more! Stay tuned to DS for sneaks from Jon this afternoon & tomorrow AM as the The Lossy Botany Lab grows closer…
Collaborative Plushes for Brain Drain
Brain Drain presents some more great collaborations between Jon and Felt Mistress. Check out the show running now through July 11th at The Winchester Discovery Centre.
Thursday Morning Sneak Peeks
I’m not typically too fond of sneak peeks, but I’m on a roll this morning here, and I thought you could all use a bit of delayed gratification. What you’re looking at above is a mysterious object sent directly by Jon (origin and provenance as yet unknown) book-ended by two plush sculptures by the always-awesome Felt Mistress courtesy of her Flickr page. The plushes are set to be revealed at Jon’s upcoming (May 14th) Brain Drain show at the Winchester Discovery Centre. Of all the flurry of Burger activity across the pond lately, this is the show I’d like to go to most. Please send over the private jet, thanks.
Pickle Pig Plush With Felt Mistress
Awww…check out the latest plush mash-up between Jon Burgerman and Felt Mistress! It’s a pickled pig (duh) and at £95 (~ $146 USD) and almost 16 inches, it’s a good way to get in on the usually-exclusive-to-art-shows collabo action. The hand-stitched pieces are “very limited” and come with a stitched label. Naturally, I adore this, but I’m tapped out this month. Make me jealous by getting one of your own right here.
[UPDATE: This just in from my man Jeps, ambassador of the Dutch Posse: "If people respond positive to them, they will bring them to production. Quoting Felt Mistress: 'We only have 3, and these are to decide if we should make more!'"]
Piccalilicus and the Magical Multicoloured Cardy of Wonder and Wonderment
The JB x FM collaboration keeps rolling, and this time Jon teams up with Louise aka Felt Mistress in a piece for the Multiversal Group Show, opening December 3rd in Miami. If you’re wondering how these collabs work, in this case, Jon sent Louise “a naked character design to dress.” I asked her about the inspiration for that terrific cardigan: “Fancy cardigans always come to mind when thinking of Jon.” Do those socks come in adult sizes??? Check out previous JB x FM soft sculptures in the artkive here. I’ll actually be on site to see this show in Miami. I’ll try to play it cool, and not re-enact this moment that has remained with me since 1994 when Weezer opened for Lush and these dudes from New Jersey pulled out a sweater and started unraveling it during Weezer’s signature song. I was there for Lush, and found the whole moment rather unfortunate, but see, it’s still with me 15 years later.
Burgerman x Felt Mistress Hipsters in 2D and 3D
I can’t resist one last post about the Felt Mistress‘ Hipsters plush collab with Jon. Louise showed us a couple of process shots, but thanks to the photography team at GRNY, here are some side-by-side comparisons of the Hipsters in 2D and 3D. I love these guys so much. They recently got some great press on the Creative Review blog, and now they’re lighting up the “twitterverse.” Congrats! Some of the Hipsters are still hanging out for sale here.
This just in from The Felt Mistress:
Being a perfectionist I have to mention the colours and some clothes (Hammel didn’t have patches on his elbow) on the sketches I worked from changed on the final sketches Jon produced for the show. Don’t want y’all to think I changed the colours or clothing. (I sound crazy don’t I) Thanks X.
Hipster Plushes by Felt Mistress
This is especially cool to finally see after a bunch of teasers. A couple of quick observations about the amazing Hipster plushes of one Louise (aka Felt Mistress): 1) They rule, 2) They really are accurate 3D versions of Jon’s characters, and 3) They really are accurate versions of Brooklyn hipsters (interesting as Jon and Louise are both from the UK). These were, of course, part of Jon’s solo show, My American Summer. Close up shots of each character after the jump. Process shots over at the Felt Mistress Flickr page. The dolls are for sale (while available) from Giant Robot for $325 each. Call (212) 674-4769 for availability. I hope these go to good homes. If I had money, I’d be like Angelina and Brad and adopt the whole lot.
