Small Favors at Giant Robot

Jon Burgerman for Small Favors at Giant Robot
Small Favors, a show of about 70 artists working in mini-size, opened tonight at Giant Robot in New York. Jon’s pieces (particularly when viewed together) have a much more definitively downer tone than the My American Summer work he did for GRNY less than a year ago. This tends to make me think that it’s the chilly Nottingham air that is rendering Jon–much like the color of the paper in the work shown above–blue. Come back to America, Mr. Burgerman! (And will you bring your solution to standard-sounding indie music, aka Anxieteam, too?)

My American Summer

My American Summer

Tomorrow night, Jon will present work inspired by his summer in New York and Los Angeles at Giant Robot. Join Jon to chat about the hipsters and heat beginning at 6:30PM. Jon talks a bit about how My American Summer came about in this Juxtapoz interview. (Hint: it involves a “cat emergency” and to a lesser extent, Matt Groening.) The show runs through September 16th. Here’s the blurb from GRNY and a couple exclusive sneak previews.

My American Summer will feature works that have been made during Burgerman’s nearly three-month visit to America (in Los Angeles and, mainly, New York City). Most are drawings on paper, while others are unique, three-dimensional versions of his observations on his Brooklyn Hipsters, hand-made by plush expert, The Felt Mistress. The work plays with notions of being a tourist, cliched outsider observations, and how some cultural differences are now homogenized in most major cities.

MixtART Group Show

I was very happy to attend a group show with several pieces by Jon on Saturday, September 20th 2008 at San Francisco’s Giant Robot. They hosted an art exhibition spanning the genres of illustration, character design, street art, tattoo art, urban vinyl and indie comics sponsored by Hands-On Mobile. Some of the artists who showed work as part of the new mixtART service included: Jon, Alex Pardee, Buff Monster, Patrick Ma, Patricio Oliver, Ekundayo, Dave Correia, Brent McHugh, Astro and Noferin. For $1.99 you can download their art to your cell phone.

In addition to his MixtART Mobile Phone Wallpaper,  Jon had many new reclaimed cardboard pieces in the show, and he also did the artwork for the flier.
